Merry Christmas!

Christmas day started off bright and sunny
and it stayed that way, even better.
20° warmer would have been nice
and we are just happy it isn't raining.

Made special coffee and had eggs, sausage and toast for breakfast
after all it was going to be a "hard" day
And off on a road trip.
Decided to go back North
to see the sights we drove by on Wednesday
Crescent City was pretty much closed
not that we didn't expect that being Christmas.

Toured the city for a bit and finally found our way to the coast
Light winds, occasional cloud and sunny
perfect winter day at the coast.

Picked up rocks, shells and drift wood
and the boyz found the beach fun and wanted to run
too many people and dogs for that to happen.

And the light house from the north side.

You can actually walk to the lighthouse during low tide. We did not do the walk.

Then headed inland up Howland Dr.
This is a drive, not for the faint of heart.
It winds for about 10 miles through Jedidiah Smith State Park
one lane and NOT a one way.
It is dirt with a little gravel and a few turnouts.
Most not the size for a full sized pickup.

The Redwood trees on this drive are almost haunting

It is a slow road but a must see.
Since there was little to no wind it was so quiet you could hear yourself think
I do understand why the "Tree Huggers" want to save these giants.
And these parks are a wonderful resource for this to happen.
Mostly we have to manage our forests, but these parks need to remain
After being at the ever moving ocean (the Unstoppable Force)
and being with these 1000 yr old giants (the Immovable Object)
Helped me appreciate the miracle of Christ's birth.
So for all the tree huggers..........

This remains of a fallen giant are from a storm long ago
The tree partially fell and was across the road so it had to be removed for safety
and access.

Some may recognize Millie in front of this tree from the last time our friend Greg G. sacrificed his vehicle to the road, just for us. Thanks Greg, you should take Eileen there, just remember to get a rental car. LOL

Really, photos do not convey the size of these remarkable trees
and the rain forest feel of the park.
You have to see it yourself.

I saw that many of these trees appeared to have had lightning damage, or maybe old fire damage?
Scorched sides and some had center hollows that are black inside and scorch marks on the outside.
This one had both.
The area inside would have been large enough for Millie, me and the dogs to be inside without being crowded, OK, would have been tighter than our big white box.
Saw another that had fallen, it was the main trunk, about 50 feet long, that was left.
Unique thing is that it was hollow the whole way and about 4 feet in diameter
the tree must have been about 7 or 8 feet in diameter.

Nice pair Millie!

Then back to Crescent City and the Safeway store, about the only store open.
Picked up a sandwich, Doritos and a drink
went to the beach to watch the sunset.
While waiting for the sunset we ate and I caught this one.

Then sunset.

That was nearly then end of the day.
We headed back to camp after sunset, still a 20 mile drive in the dark
on twisty roads with no ditches, only big trees.
Made it safe and when home, talked to Carissia.
Had a bite to eat, walk the dogs and watched a few episodes of Wings, Season 3
Worked on a few images and went to bed.
Slept really well, it was a tiring day.

We hoping you have all had a Merry Christmas.
Missed being with our family (a lot)
We had each other and an amazing day.
God does know what he is doing and we have to trust his power.
The trees and the ocean shows what spectacular things he has done.

Merry Christmas!
God bless us all and have a Happy New Year.
Tom and Millie
