Day at Biosphere 2

Hi all
Yesterday was fun, educational and tiring.
First had to get a sunrise photo,
since I was up early to get ready for the day.

Met up with Ken and Muriel and let Ken drive.
About an hour out to the facility and it was a beautiful day.
University of Arizona's Biosphere 2 is very much worth the trip.
It is an engineering wonder, at least to me.

And so many diverse climates under "one" roof.
We toured through the rain forest

the savana

the desert

the crew quarters

the basement,

the ocean

and the lung.
A huge dome structure that equalized the pressure in the facility.
The black in the photo is a rubber membrane that allows this
doughnut like structure to expand and collapse, to "breathe".

The amazing part is that when it was sealed for 3 years
it only lost 6% of the "atmosphere" per year.
In the desert area they had Century plants.
Supposed to bloom once a century.

The facility is now open and used for environmental research.
Since many areas can be sealed and the environment controlled
they try "what if" scenarios to see what changes in the vegetation make up.
Well, definitely not enough room here to explain much.
Great tour and good guide.
Ocotillio blossom

And a few flowers on the grounds.

On the way back to the BWB
stopped for groceries
the home and crashed.
Couldn't pass up the RV park sunset photo.

Lots of photos to edit
and Millie got busy with a quilting project.
Bed fairly early and slept great.

Today we think we are going out to Colossal Cave Park.
It's not far so if the crowds are too big we may find something else to do.
Going to be record breaking  hot today, so likely the furkids will stay in the Air conditioned BWB.

Make your day great
Tom and Millie
